Come and peruse at leisure our seasonal plants, shrubs, bushes, trees, furniture and sundries in peaceful surroundings, hand in hand with wildlife, in the picturesque village of Salterforth, just outside Barnoldswick on the Lancashire and Yorkshire border.

A stone’s throw from the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, our nursery offers a tranquil retreat with everything you need for your garden, after which you could explore Barnoldswick, with more independent shops than any other town in Britain.

As an established family business with a well-earned reputation, we are a favourite destination for passionate gardeners who travel from across the region, even if it’s just to talk about plants and gardening.

Plants & Shrubs

Come and see our big selection of annuals. From Alyssum to zonal green leaf geranium and everything in between, we’ve got the lot. We stock a large variety of perennials, including hardy plants, such as Agapanthus, Alstroemeria, Astilbe, Delphinium, Dicentra, fern and Hosta plus many more, some of which are quite rare. And we have a huge amount of evergreen and deciduous shrubs from Ilex, Magnolia and Rhododendron, to more exotic Cordyline, Trachycarpus and Yucca.

We have a variety of climbing plants like Actinidia, Campsis, Clematis, honeysuckle, Hydrangea, ivy, jasmine and Wisteria, and a good selection of ornamental grasses. We stock a whole range of pond plants and accessories, and lots of alpines including Alyssum, Arabis, Aubrieta and Sedum.

We also stock Summer and Autumn bedding plants, a wide range of roses such as climbing, floribunda, hybrid tea, patio, shrub ground cover and standard roses, as well as seasonal herbs, vegetables, seed potatoes and Spring/Autumn bulbs.

Garden ornaments can form a unique focal point for any garden and can be enjoyed all year round. They also make ideal gifts for any occasion. You’ll find a wide variety of ornaments dotted throughout our premises.

The plants that you see here represent a snapshot of our collection, but there’s plenty more for you to explore and our displays are constantly changing with the seasons. Pay us a visit to see for yourself what’s looking good right now.

Trees & Topiary

No garden should be without a tree. From the very small to the very tall, we stock it all. For that large gap how about a redwood (only 375 feet high!) or a flagpole cherry? Or perhaps something smaller, like crab apple or an ornamental cherry? We also have stakes, ties and feed to get those trees starting on the right foot.

Our range of evergreen conifers, including Aralicardis, Aries, Chamaecyparis, Codeus, Cryptomeria, Cupressus and Juniperus, are available all year round, and we also supply Christmas trees and wreaths. We stock a good supply of hedging plants such as beech, hawthorn, laurel, leylandii, privet and yew, and a huge variety of fruit trees:

Apples - Bramley, Cox’s Orange Pippin, Discovery, Golden Delicious, James Grieve, Katy and russets.

Pears - Conference, Doyenne du Comice and Williams.

Plums - Czar, Merryweather, Opal, Victoria and Warwickshire Drooper.

Cherries - Napoleon, Morello, Stella and Sunburst.

We have many more varieties of fruit trees like medlar, nectarine and peach. And if it’s soft fruit you’re after we also have currants, blackberries, blueberries, figs, gooseberries, kiwis, loganberries, raspberries, rhubarb, strawberries and tayberries.

And we have lots of topiary, both box and bay, in a variety of shapes like lollipops, pyramids and spirals, as well as more ornate sculptures like birds and rabbits.

Garden Furniture

The team here at Salterforth has spent many hours putting together an inspired collection of garden furniture. We have benches, tables, chairs and other items in traditional wood and ornate metal, in a variety of colours and styles. Come along and try them out to get the right feel for you and your garden.

We also stock a range of chimineas and fire pits in different sizes and styles to suit any garden, and provide a focal point as the evenings draw closed.

We feel it is important to support local trades and so always endeavour to stock a good range of locally produced handicrafts, giving you the chance to pick up something just that little bit different, whether you’re treating someone special or just spoiling yourself.

Supplies & Sundries

We carry a fantastic selection of pots of all colours, shapes and sizes, both traditional and modern, to suit any garden. We have lots of garden ornaments, from cute pot animals to classical statues. As well as a variety of water features, decorative arches and plant supports.

In our shop we stock all your gardening needs, including Hozelock products, weed killers, feeds and fertilisers. We have a large variety of seeds and sundries for growing your own vegetables and plants. We've got all your pond essentials, lawn essentials, grass seed, indoor plants, outdoor solar lighting, hanging baskets, trellising, tubs, tools, bird tables, bird baths, feeders... We've got the lot.

We have large stocks of composts, John Innes, top soils, weed killers, aggregates, gravel and stone, which we can help you load. We also deliver top soil by the tonne (minimum 1 tonne, order by email), or bring your own Summer baskets or tubs and we can fill them with your own choices.
